by Jonathan SangerOld warships could be making a comeback. The U.S. Navy needs more ships, and it can’t build them fast enough. Its target is to have 355 ships afloat in 15 years.  The specific class type are Oliver Hazard Perry frigates. Built in the 1970s and 1980s, the ships have all been retired in the last 20 years. They were designed to protect carrier groups against attacks from above and below the water’s surface.  However, modernizing the ships could still be quite expensive. It wouldn’t be the first time this happened. President Reagan brought the Iowa Class battleship USS Missouri out of retirement in 1986. The Navy is also looking to extend the life of ships currently in service.
