Elizabeth Banks rips Steven Spielberg for not directing female films

Elizabeth Banks has a bone to pick with famed movie director Steven Spielberg. While accepting an award from Women in Film — a nonprofit group that promotes equal opportunities for women in the film industry — Banks criticized the Jaws director for the lack of women leads in his films. I went to 'Indiana Jones’ and ‘Jaws’ and every movie Steven Spielberg ever made,” she said, “and by the way, he’s never made a movie with a female lead. Sorry, Steven. I don’t mean to call your ass out, but it’s true. The problem with Banks' statement is that she's technically wrong. While Spielberg has directed 30 feature films, only three movies — "The Sugarland Express," "The Color Purple" and "The BFG" — contain female leads. However, what Banks is likely trying to say is that other acclaimed directors, like Quentin Tarantino and Wed Anderson, have managed to work strong female characters into their films.
