CHENNAI: Ending nearly one month of uncertainty over the leadership of the AIADMK, former chief minister J Jayalalithaa's close aide V K Sasikala on Saturday assumed office as the general secretary of the party.

She is the sixth general secretary of the party, founded by matinee idol M G Ramachandran and is also the second woman to occupy the post after Jayalalithaa.

In her maiden speech after formally taking over the reins at the AIADMK headquarters here, Sasikala exuded confidence that the party cadres would support her.

"I accept this responsibility with the confidence that several crores of party cadres will stand by me," said 62-year-old Sasikala in an emotionally charged speech, in which she recalled her deceased friend's name repeatedly.
