Darjeeling once again faced violent agitation from Gorkha Janmukti Morcha workers after Mamata Banerjee’s decision to teach Bengali in school in the hills. Almost after four decades, army has to be called in to prevent more violence in the hill town. Two columns of army (180 personnel) have already moved to Darjeeling to take control of the area. Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM)president Bimal Gurung called for agitation against chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s move to teach Bengali in school in the hills, terming it ‘an assault on the Nepali-speaking population.In a public meeting in Mirik , the chief minister stepped up the pressure on GJM by announcing a special audit of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), the autonomous body controlled by the Morcha.
