What Happened To This Syrian Boy?

by Andrew CaringiOmran Daqneesh became a symbol of the bombings in Aleppo last summer after a photo of him covered in ash and blood went viral. Omran and his family have now reappeared in interviews that aired on pro-government news outlets. Omran’s father says rebel groups had used the iconic image as a propaganda tool and that he was offered money to speak out against the Syrian government, which he refused to do. The Syrian government is known for maintaining tight control over news coverage, but it’s not clear if the family gave the interviews under pressure. They are still living in Aleppo, which is now under the control of government forces.
