The suspicious death of Elizabethan noblewoman Amy Dudley, the wife of Robert Dudley, the favourite and alleged lover of Queen Elizabeth I and the man the monarch is said to have wanted to marry - if only he had been available. Amy's body was found at the foot of the stairs at Cumnor Place, her home in Oxfordshire in 1560, and her death caused a scandal - with the finger of blame pointed firmly at Dudley.
