Senate Republicans fear government shutdown come September
  • 7 years ago
With nomination vote delays by Democrats and little bipartisan cooperation, the Senate may confront issues with a debt default and government shutdown later this year. Recently, Senator John McCain reflected on the first five months of the GOP's rule: Everything piles up, we go to the edge of the cliff, shut down the government, then we have an omnibus or a continuing resolution where we can vote yes or no. No amendments, no improvements, nothing, Other senators have also expressed their frustrations with the lack of communication between parties: When are we going to do the appropriations? We’re not talking about that. It’s gonna go to a [continuing resolution] or an omnibus. We get an up-or-down vote on the whole thing, which is what I’m yelling about.” Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) Congress would have to raise the debt ceiling before the August recess, which Republicans are working to cancel so the focus would be to progress major legislation.
