President Trump will likely not try and block former FBI Director James Comey from testifying in front of Congress this coming week, according to a recent New York Times report.
There had been speculation that Trump could invoke executive privilege which was designed to keep those close to the president from having to share privately communicated information with lawmakers.
White House counselor Kellyanne Conway and press secretary Sean Spicer had both made comments to the media that seemed to suggest the option was still a possibility.
However, the Times cites two senior administration officials as saying that Trump would likely not pursue executive privilege, with one reportedly indicating that he, in fact, “wanted Mr. Comey to testify because the president had nothing to hide and wanted Mr. Comey’s statements to be publicly aired.”
Though the newspaper suggests that Trump could unexpectedly change course, experts have pointed out that attempting to do so would likely be ineffective and legally difficult.
