President Trump is being called out for not issuing an official proclamation to recognize Pride Month which has typically been observed in June.
According to the liberal group ThinkProgress, “Shin Inouye, who served as Obama’s LGBTQ communications liaison from 2009–2014, was the first to notice…”
On Wednesday, Inouye tweeted a list of proclamations Trump had approved including National Homeownership Month, National Ocean Month, African-American Music Appreciation Month, and Great Outdoors Month.
Inouye wrote, “@realDonaldTrump couldn't be bothered to issue a proclamation to recognize #LGBTPrideMonth. Given his record, maybe it's for the best.”
The tradition of recognizing the LGBT community in the month of June had been maintained each year by former President Obama since 2011, with former President Clinton being the first to start the designation in the year 2000, notes Politico.
While Republican President George W. Bush, who was publicly opposed to gay marriage, did not follow suit, Trump had courted the community during the election.
At a New Hampshire rally which was held soon after the Pulse nightclub attack, he said, “Ask yourself, who is really the friend of women and the LGBT community? Donald Trump with actions or Hillary Clinton with her words?”
As a result of Trump’s silence about Pride Month, some federal offices have reportedly refrained from issuing materials commemorating the event.
However, the Washington Blade, an LGBT-focused newspaper, has said that groups within some agencies like the Small Business Administration were still planning to hold activities in observance of the month.
First daughter and White House adviser Ivanka Trump also tweeted about Pride Month in two separate posts including one where she writes, “I am proud to support my LGBTQ friends and the LGBTQ Americans who have made immense contributions to our society and economy.”
