LINCOLN COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI — A sheriff’s deputy was among eight people killed when a man went on a shooting rampage over the weekend at three separate locations in Lincoln County, Mississippi.

The killings began on Saturday night when police were called to a domestic dispute involving suspect Willie Corey Godbolt, 35, and his wife.

Godbolt appeared to be leaving after Sheriff’s Deputy William Durr arrived at the scene of the dispute, but the suspect then took a gun out from his back pocket and started shooting. Godbolt’s wife, her mother and sister, and the deputy were killed.

Speaking about the deputy, Godbolt told the Clarion-Ledger: “My pain wasn't designed for him. He was just there.
“We was talking about me trying to take the children home … somebody called the officer … that's what they do, they intervene. It cost him his life. I'm sorry.”
Godbolt then went to a second home where he allegedly killed two young men. The body of a man and a woman were later found at a third crime scene.

Godbolt was arrested shortly before 7am on Sunday. He admitted that “suicide by cop” was his intention. “I ain't fit to live, not after what I done,” he told the Clarion-Ledger.
