Giant cesspool sinkhole swallows man alive

HUNTINGTON, LONG ISLAND — A workman was killed in Long Island on Wednesday when a massive sinkhole swallowed him alive.

Edward Sinnott, 59, was a member of a crew of workers installing a cesspool outside a house in Huntington.

Without warning, the sinkhole opened up beneath the workers’ feet. One of the men fell in the hole but escaped by grabbing some construction equipment and hanging on for dear life, NBC4 New York reported.

Sinnott was not so lucky, however.

For several hours, rescue workers searched frantically for Sinnott, but it was too late to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sinkhole was reportedly wider than the length of two cars. There have been several reports of people and animals falling into cesspools in Long Island in recent years.
