These Coral Reefs Could Beat Climate Change

by Anthony FalcoCould some coral reefs adapt to global warming? It certainly looks that way. Researchers studied coral in the Red Sea’s Gulf of Aqaba, placing specimens into heated tanks for six weeks. They found the specimens were not adversely affected by the heat — in fact, they showed signs of improvement in areas like energy metabolism. The findings suggest that these coral reefs have evolved to handle warming waters. As reefs around the world are dying off, researchers hope to use Aqaba’s coral to reseed underwater plant life elsewhere.
