An Alaska man’s suicide attempt could land him in prison after a bullet he fired into his head allegedly killed his girlfriend.
KTVA reports that the incident involving 21-year-old Victor Sibson and 22-year-old Brittany-Mae Haag occurred on April 19. Police reportedly arrived on the scene to find both with serious gunshot wounds; as assistant district attorney James Fayette told the media outlet, “He had an entry wound on the left side of his head, he had an exit wound on the top of his skull.”
Meanwhile, the bullet is believed to have traveled from Sibson's head and into the side of Haag's chest, resulting in internal damage that ultimately contributed to her death hours later.
According to Alaska Dispatch News, Fayette “said Thursday that prosecutors believe Haag was trying to stop Sibson from killing himself when the shooting occurred.”
He is quoted as saying, “What we have is a struggle-for-the-gun suicide attempt that resulted in Mr. Sibson putting a bullet through his own skull...followed by the extreme-indifference killing of a domestic partner.”
Sibson’s blood alcohol level was also said to be extremely high at the time, notes KTUU.
According to KTVA, he has since been indicted on a second-degree murder charge and, if found guilty, could receive a prison sentence of up to 99 years.
