Bomb hoax? Woman charged after novelty alarm clock sparks bomb scare in Virginia

SHORT PUMP, VIRGINIA — A woman accused of possessing a hoax explosive device that caused a bomb scare said the whole incident was blown out of proportion.
Daphne Page, 52, said she paid a buck for the alarm clock at a garage sale. It looks like a bundle of dynamite and was intended as a gift for her daugher.
Page left the clock on the back seat of her car to go grocery shopping at a Whole Foods in Virginia on Friday, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
But a store employee saw the device, freaked out, and called the cops.
Page said the clock is obviously a fake bomb and it never occurred to her that it would cause such alarm. But the cops weren’t even remotely amused.
The joke blew up in Page’s face when she was arrested and charged with the manufacture, possession, or use of explosives. The statute includes the possession of hoax devices.
Page spent the weekend in jail and was released on a $2,500 bond after appearing before a judge on Monday.
She’s due back in court on Aug. 24 and is hoping this whole thing blows over — otherwise she could be facing up to five years in the slammer.
