NFL owners vote to shorten overtime period

NFL owners voted to shorten the overtime period Tuesday during the Spring League Meeting in Chicago. According to NFL Network, the move is aimed at protecting the players. Furthermore, it's also designed to benefit teams that will play on a short week. The original proposal for a shortened overtime was suggested back in March by the competition committee, citing player fatigue as one of the reasons for the shortening. How much impact the shortening will actually have has yet to be determined as less than a third of OT games in the last five seasons have gone more than 10 minutes.
