EU fines Facebook$122M for 'misleading' Whatsapp deal
  • 7 years ago
The European Union fined Facebook $122 million for providing "misleading information" about its buyout of Whatsapp. The European Commission said that Facebook initially noted it would be unable to link Facebook and WhatsApp user accounts. But in 2016, Whatsapp offered an update allowing users to link their phone numbers with their Facebook accounts. "Today's decision sends a clear signal to companies that they must comply with all aspects of EU merger rules, including the obligation to provide correct information. And it imposes a proportionate and deterrent fine on Facebook," EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager.
