Great White Sharks Spotted in Long Beach, California
  • 7 years ago

Towboat captains captured great white sharks in Long Beach, California, on May 2. Ricky Birks and Mike Del Grande operate TowBoatUS in Long Beach. Their job is to respond to any broken down vessels in their area. The pair took advantage of recent shark sightings off the Long Beach Peninsula and drove their vessel out to try to capture shark footage.
Using GoPro cameras they strapped to the bottom of their boat, the crew shot video of about 13 sharks swimming just 50 feet away from the Long Beach shoreline.
Birks described the sharks as being “curious.” The sharks can be seen poking their heads beneath the boat several times.
Birks and Del Grande hope to gather more footage in the near future. The pair has been in contact with Dr. Chris Lowe of the Long Beach State Shark Lab and their footage is being used to help the lab document the sharks. Credit: Ricky Birks & Mike Del Grande via Storyful
