Australian lawmaker Larissa Waters recently made history with her 2-month-old baby Alia Joy, reports CNN.
As the Queensland Senator tweeted on Monday night, “So proud that my daughter Alia is the first baby to be breastfed in the federal Parliament! We need more #women & parents in Parli…”
According to Australia’s ABC News, “Parliamentary rules were changed last year to allow mothers to feed their children in the chamber. Previously parliamentary rules stated children were technically banned in the chamber and breastfeeding mothers were given a proxy vote.”
In fact, Waters was a leading advocate for the change, arguing in November that “if we want more young women in Parliament, we must make the rules more family friendly to allow new mothers and new fathers to balance their parliamentary and parental duties.”
