Cinco De Mayo is more popular in the United States than in Mexico. Cinco De Mayo is not a celebration of Mexico's independence. The holiday celebrates the Battle of Puebla, where the Mexicans made a stand against an invading French army in 1862. The commercialization of Cinco De Mayo by alcohol companies began in the 1980s. Americans consume up to 81 million pounds of avocados on Cinco de Mayo every year.
