Vancouver Police superintendent Michelle Davey recently shared an image on Twitter of what appeared to be a pigeon’s nest made out of hypodermic needles.
The picture, which was taken in a low-cost housing unit, prompted widespread concern and questions, reports The Telegraph.
Global News notes that according to the police department spokesperson Randy Fincham, the image was shared, “to show the reality of drug use in the Downtown Eastside and to provide a rare glimpse into the lives of first responders, health care providers and others involved in the opioid crisis." However, some experts are pointing issues in the picture.
Marion Chatelain, an urban wildlife specialist, told the National Post, “To the best of my knowledge, feral pigeons do not use human wastes to build their nest.” She also noted that pigeons generally lay their eggs in batches of two, not three as the picture shows.
Regardless of the image’s authenticity, the opioid problem in Vancouver is very real. In December, fentanyl overdoses claimed the lives of 9 people within 24 hours in the Canadian city.
Thus far this year, Vancouver has experienced over 100 deaths due to drugs.
