Eleven 'Handmaids' Protest Restrictions on Reproductive Care at Missouri State Capitol
  • 7 years ago

Eleven women dressed up as handmaids from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale and protested proposed restrictions on reproductive care at the Missouri state capitol on May 3.In the novel, set in a fictionalized version of the United States called the “Republic of Gilead,” women are stripped of their rights and their reproductive systems are closely monitored and controlled by a male-led Christian, totalitarian regime.According to Planned Parenthood, Missouri lawmakers have so far this year introduced more than 40 bills that could “impact Missourians’ sexual and reproductive health and rights.”The demonstration was backed by the local branches of Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL), and took inspiration from another ‘handmaids’ protest that took place in Texas on March 21.
