BANGKOK — At least 27 people, including babies, were reportedly injured when an Aeroflot flight traveling from Moscow to Bangkok hit severe turbulence on Monday morning.

Flight SU270 was about 40 minutes away from Bangkok when it hit clear-air turbulence. The crew was reportedly not able to warn the passengers to return to their seats and fasten their seatbelts before the incident.

Clear-air turbulence generally occurs in calm, cloudless skies and cannot be detected by radar. Under such conditions, the plane moves through the space between fast and slow jet streams.

Three passengers reportedly required surgeries to treat leg fractures and broken ribs. Aeroflot said the company will cover the medical costs of the injured. The company also stated that about 750 cases of clear-air turbulence are recorded every year globally.
