New research has identified some surprising reasons as to why Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton likely failed to win the 2016 presidential election.
A liberal group called Priorities USA commissioned Global Strategy Group and Garin Hart Yang to survey specific groups of voters--those who supported former President Obama in 2012 but voted for Donald Trump in 2016--called Obama-Trump voters--and those whose voted for Obama but did not vote in the 2016 election--called drop-off voters.
Economic difficulties appear to be a key factor in both groups, with a presentation about the research stating that “Clinton and Democrats’ economic message did not break through to drop-off or Obama-Trump voters, even though drop-off voters are decidedly anti-Trump.”
It also acknowledges that “Drop-off voters already believe that Trump’s policies will benefit the wealthy over other groups, but there is more work to be done to convince Obama-Trump voters that this is the case.”
Health care was another meaningful issue for both groups which expressed concern about rising costs and cuts to programs like Medicare negatively affecting their own lives.
While Clinton’s loss has been blamed on a failure of her base to turn out in high numbers, the research indicates that it was driven largely by Obama-Trump voters.
As Priorities USA chairman Guy Cecil told the Washington Post, “If you felt like your life wasn’t getting better over eight years, then you might draw a conclusion that Democrats don’t care about you...you had a lot of consistency with the Obama-Trump voters...in terms of the severe economic anxiety they face.”
