Congress passes stopgap bill to avoid government shutdown

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a stopgap legislation to avoid a government shutdown on Friday. The House passed the bill with a tally of 382-30 and was then sent to the Senate. The legislation will be sent to President Donald Trump to sign into law later in the day. The bill provides federal funding until May 5, which gives lawmakers enough time to reach a deal on funding for the rest of the fiscal year that ends on September 30. "The fact that we are here again at the last minute just trying to keep the government open is sad," said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass. "Once again, we have a manufactured crisis at the edge of a cliff."
