Actress Allison Janney, who portrayed White House press secretary C.J. Cregg on 'The West Wing,' gave a backhanded compliment to President Trump’s real-life spokesperson.
During an appearance on ABC's 'The View' Monday, she said, “The best thing about Sean Spicer is Melissa McCarthy…That’s the one positive thing that I think has come out of that.”
Melissa McCarthy has been boosting the ratings of 'Saturday Night Live' with her portrayal of the gum-chewing White House press secretary Spicer who has been described as angry and mocking.
However, Janney did note that “it’s a difficult job even if you’re working for a president that has a high approval rating…You have to be a servant of two masters--the president and the press and the people. It’s a very difficult tightrope.”
The actress also commented to the panel that while she was well-guided by the show’s creator, Aaron Sorkin, Spicer, in her words, is “in the cockpit with someone I’m not sure who knows if they know how to fly a plane.”
Meanwhile, the Washington Post is reporting that, despite speculation over Spicer’s job security, Trump has privately expressed his support for him.
According to the media outlet, the president said at a gathering last month, “I’m not firing Sean Spicer. That guy gets great ratings. Everyone tunes in.”
