Chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni has instructed the labour department to issue a government order that will direct employers to observe a paid holiday on polling day to raise the voting percentage, especially of Chennai City, which has averaged 67% so far. This decision has been strongly resisted by major IT companies of the state. About 15% of the country's 3-million strong technology workforce resides in Chennai.
