Since Russia began an official military campaign to support dictator Bashar al-Assad in Syria in 2015, the country has taken on an increased role in the Middle East. Since January 2015, Middle Eastern leaders paid 25 visits to Putin, five more than to then US President Barack Obama. Besides the Kremlin’s traditional allies, formal US partners such as Egypt, Turkey and Israel now flocked to Russia more often. So what are Russian President Vladimir Putin's ambitions in the Middle East?
