Residents around Bedminster, New Jersey, are reportedly concerned about the chaos they could soon face if President Trump shifts his weekend destination from Mar-a-Lago in Florida to the small northern town where his Trump National Golf Club is located.
Politico quotes Nick Strakhov, a longtime local, as saying, “We’re kind of apprehensive, I guess you could say. It’s nice to be recognized. But on the other hand, if it gets to be tedious, we might start to complain.”
One of the issues is traffic congestion brought on by road closures.
The other is cost, with the Bedminster mayor Steve Parker writing in a letter that seven three-day-long visits by Trump could mean the town would have to pay an estimated $300,000 or more in overtime--an amount he and other local officials have not yet found a way to cover.
And while New Jersey Representative Leonard Lance has been in contact with the U.S. Department of Justice and other agencies about securing extra funding, no agreements have been announced, notes Politico.
CNN reported a week ago that rising Florida temperatures would likely cause Trump to wrap up his visits to his Palm Beach club through next month, with more frequent visits expected to Trump Tower in New York City or his club in New Jersey.
He is said to be particularly fond of the latter property, with the news outlet pointing out that “Trump has expressed a desire to be buried [there].”
Meanwhile, Trump’s visits to Mar-a-Lago have been controversial, with USA Today counting seven trips since he took office just four months ago.
Critics have not only taken issue with the high cost of transporting and protecting him each time he’s in town--estimated to be in the millions--but also the number of times Trump had blasted former President Obama for golfing when he himself has continued to play the game regularly.
