Brendon McCullum’s 72 didn’t turn out to be enough in Gujarat Lions’ mammoth 214-run chase as Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Gujarat Lions by 21 runs, with Yuzvendra Chahal finishing with figures of 3/31, in their 2017 Indian Premier League clash at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot. Earlier, Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli scored 77 and 64, respectively, as RCB posted a total of 213/2. Get IPL 2017 highlights of Gujarat Lions vs Royal Challengers Bangalore here.

The Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Suresh Raina's Gujarat Lions by 21 runs for their second win in IPL 2017. Being put into bat, Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli gave RCB a blistering start, putting on 122 runs for the first wicket. Gayle reached a personal milestone, becoming the first man to score 10000 runs in T20 cricket, but fell just 23 runs short of his sixth IPL ton. Kohli, too, looked in great touch and scored his 28th IPL half century but fell in search of quick runs. While Brendon McCullum (72) steadied the Gujarat innings after Dwayne Smith (1), Suresh Raina (23) and Aaron Finch (19) fell, young Ishan Kishan's quick 16 ball-39 gave RCB a bit of a scare, especially with Kohli dropping his catch at a crucial moment. However, things worked out just fine and Kohli and his merry men can finally smile!

Gayle first man to score 10,000 runs in T20 cricket
RCB's Gayle scripted yet another chapter in the cricketing record books as he became the first player to score 10,000 runs in the shortest format of the game. Gayle has played 290 T20 games so far in his career. The big-hitting West Indian, who needed three runs to reach the milestone, achieved the feat when he steered a single to third man during the fourth over. Gayle, 37, is already the leading run-getter in T20s and the owner of a host of records in the format: the most centuries (18) and fifties (61), highest individual score (175* for RCB in the IPL), joint fastest fifty (off 12 balls for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League), most sixes (743) and fours (769).
Gayle-Kohli quickfire century opening stand
Tormentor-in-chief Gayle (77 of 38 balls) and skipper Kohli (64 off 50 balls) hit contrasting fifties and added 122 runs off 76 balls for the first wicket in quick time. Gayle changed his gears, soon after reaching the landmark, to lead RCB's run charge. He tonked Ravindra Jadeja for two fours and two sixes in a row in the eighth over but was lucky to survive after Brendon McCullum held a fine diving catch, running a fair distance at wide of long-off but to McCullum's dismay, his hat touched the boundary rope which gave Gayle a life. Gayle, who hammered seven sixes and five boundaries during his stay at the crease, reached his fifty off 23 balls but could add only 27 more runs before GL paceman Basil Thampi got rid of the big man, trapping him right in front of the wicket. Young Thampi bowled it full and got it to curl back in sharply from round the wicket. Gayle was late to bring his bat down. Kohli, however, played an uncharacteristic knock, after an early onslaught, as he brought up his fifty off 43 balls. He scored seven fours and one six in his innings.
