‘Hands off universities!’: 70k rally against law targeting Soros-funded uni CEU in Budapest

Thousands hit the streets of Budapest on Sunday to protest last week's approval of legal amendments which target the Central European University (CEU). The CEU was founded in 1991 by billionaire George Soros. Protesters, many of them students and professors, marched to the Hungarian Parliament holding banners reading 'Veto' asking the Hungarian President Janos Ader not to sign the new law which was passed by parliament on Tuesday. The Amendment of the Higher Education Act of 28 places tougher restrictions on foreign universities; it could force the CEU to move from Budapest, as under the law, foreign universities require a campus in the capital and in their home countries.
