Man expires during eating contest after choking on half-pound donut

DENVER — A middle-aged man had his life cut short over the weekend while participating in an eating challenge that proved to be too much for his mouth to handle.
At around 1 a.m. on April 2, Travis Malouff, 42, walked into Voodoo Doughnut, a popular donuts chain, and put his competitive eating bib on. The challenge requires eaters to consume a half-pound donut, made a half-dozen donuts worth of batter, in 80 seconds or less.
When the bell sounded, Malouff stuffed as much sugary dough as he could into his face, but suddenly, he began choking. Others watching quickly realized he was in trouble, but unfortunately no one was able to help him in time. Malouff expired as a result of asphyxia, due to an obstruction of the airway.
Voodoo Doughnut has since suspended the eating challenge at its seven U.S. locations and its lone location in Taipei CIty, Taiwan.
Malouff’s tragic passing comes mere days after a sorority student, Caitlin Nelson, 20, expired from choking on pancakes in a pancake-eating competition on her school campus in Connecticut.
