Striking Teachers Sing Argentine National Anthem at Buenos Aires Rally

Thousands of teachers and activists flooded the streets of Buenos Aires on March 22 to call for higher wages and to show support for Argentina’s public school system.President Mauricio Macri commented on March 21 that the country suffered from a “terrible inequality between those who can go to private school and those who have to fall into the public school system,” worsening the ongoing labor dispute with teachers’ unions, Telesur reported.Protesters at the strike held up signs emblazoned with slogans such as “Caer En La Publica” (Fall Into Public Schools), chanting that they had proudly chosen the public school system rather than “fallen” into it.This footage shows protesters marching and singing the Argentine National Anthem.Buenos Aires teachers have demanded a 35 percent pay boost in order to make up for Argentina’s inflation rate, which is expected to reach 20 percent this year, Telesur and Reuters reported.
