New York City apparently has a 'No Dancing' law
  • 7 years ago
Back in the 1920's, New York City enacted the Cabaret Law which prohibits dancing in all establishments without a license in an effort to break up black jazz clubs. The law, however, was never repealed and so now, only 118 of the thousands of bars in NYC have a license, meaning its technically illegal to dance in most bars. While the law has clearly never stopped anyone in recent memory, the Dance Liberation Network and the NYC Artist Coalition have teamed up to bring the law down. The groups are running putting on a "Let NYC Dance" event and are circulating a petition to repeal the law. "We believe the Cabaret Law criminalizes the act of dancing without providing meaningful additional safety or quality of life measures," "This law doesn't belong in our city and we are asking our government to repeal it immediately."
