White House press secretary Sean Spicer was quick to downplay Paul Manafort’s involvement with the Trump campaign during a press conference on Monday, reports Politico.
The effort to minimize his importance came soon after FBI Director James Comey confirmed that the bureau is investigating Trump associates’ possible ties with Moscow.
Spicer said President Trump’s assertion that he had no knowledge of dealings between Russia and members of his campaign team stands.
He went on to describe Paul Manafort, former Trump campaign chairman, as a person, “who played a very limited role for a very limited amount of time.”
The Washington Post notes that Manafort joined the campaign in March and was named chairman in mid-May.
He left in August amid talk of his involvement with a pro-Russian party in Ukraine, notes the New York Times.
Spicer discussed former national security adviser Michael Flynn as well, noting his campaign involvement during the time in question was limited to, “volunteer.”
During Comey’s Monday testimony, it was also revealed that there is no evidence that supports the president’s allegation involving Obama and wiretapping.
On that matter, Spicer said, “We are still at the beginning phase of a look as to what kind of surveillance took place and why…This is one in a series of hearings that will be happening.”
