A Republican Senator has said she thinks President Trump should release his tax returns, reports The Hill.
U.S. Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa was hosting a town hall meeting Friday when she was asked by an audience member, “Do you think the president should release his tax returns so that we know whether he’s acting in the best interest of the American people?”
She responded by saying, “I think he should.”
While the crowd cheered her on that topic, a Politico report about the event states that “she absorbed boos and heckles for her answers on health care, climate change and Planned Parenthood.”
Ernst joins some Republican and more Democratic lawmakers in urging Trump to release his tax documents, a practice which has been observed by presidential nominees from both parties for decades.
The call has been prompted by concerns over possible financial ties with Russia and other foreign countries in addition to potential conflicts of interest and tax issues., reports the Huffington Post.
Politico reports that the push was recently renewed when MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow revealed information from Trump’s 2005 tax return.
Trump has cited an ongoing audit as a reason for not making the documents publicly available.
