President Trump's $1.1 trillion budget proposal pledges a $54 billion increase in spending for the Pentagon and subsequent cuts to the State Department, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Environmental Protection Agency. "The president's beholden to nobody but the people who elected him, and yes, I understand that every lawmaker over there has pet projects," said Trump budget director Mick Mulvaney. "That's the nature of the beast." Presidential budget plans must be approved by Congress. The Trump administration will release its full budget in May.
