After many years at the top of the mid-size family SUV class, the Nissan Qashqai has finally gone in for the facelift treatment. This popular model has been at the head of the class also occupied by the Kia Sportage and Ford Kuga – read on to find out if the new touches keep it ahead of the game.

Nissan Qashqai facelift styling
As you can see from the comparison image above, the most notable addition is the redesigned front bumper. The central ‘V’ section has been widened while the headlights have been redesigned to complement this. The bonnet has also been reprofiled without affecting the car’s aerodynamic character.
The rear sees similar nips and tucks. A new lower rear bumper features metal-appearance elements while the brakelights themselves have a wider ‘boomerang’ lighting signature to emphasise the car’s width. New paint finishes include Chestnut Bronze and Vivid Blue as seen in these images.

The cabin is mostly unchanged on the new model save for a redesigned steering wheel. The new unit looks more contemporary than the old one with a smaller centre section and a four-way controller allowing greater command of the built-in tech with less time spent looking away from the road.
Buyers at the top end of the market will be pleased to hear of the new Tekna+ trim that adds luxuries such as Nappa leather and 3D-effect quilting on the door panels, echoing more luxurious brands. What’s more, a premium BOSE sound system can be fitted to add significantly improved sound to the updated infotainment interface.

The Qashqai was one of the best cars to drive in its segment – not because it was sporty but because it fully committed to being one of the comfiest cars on the road. The new model doesn’t change this winning formula much other than to add more refinement through enhanced suspension and steering systems, and reduce noise through better insulation and thicker rear windows.
The range of engines is unlikely to change meaning petrol buyers get the option of a smooth 1.2 turbo or more powerful 1.6-litre turbo units. Diesel is still likely to be the bigger sellers with the 1.5-litre unit predicted to make up the bulk of orders – this engine is possibly our favourite small diesel unit so suits the Qashqai very well.

The new Qashqai will go on sale in July 2017 with the first customers receiving their cars a few months after that. Prices are unlikely to change much from the outgoing car so entry-level models could cost around £19,000 with new top-spec Tekna+ versions nudging above the the old model’s £30,000 top-range price.
