Somali pirates suspected of hijacking first ship since 2012
  • 7 years ago
Pirates have hijacked an oil tanker off the coast of Somalia, marking the first time they successfully took over a commercial vessel since 2012. The Aris 13, with eight Sri Lankan crew members onboard, sent out a distress call on Monday, before turning off its tracking system. Mohamud Ahmed Eynab, the district commissioner for Alula, told Reuters. Piracy off Somalia's coast previously posed a serious threat to global shipping, despite lessening in recent years. Somali pirates hijack crews and ships for ransom, but don't typically kill hostages unless they come under attack.
