AMA Says It Is ‘Unable To Support’ GOP Health Care Bill

The American Medical Association, or AMA, has written a letter to congressional leaders saying it is “unable to support” the GOP health care bill.

It expresses concern that, “…outlined provisions of the American Health Care Act that would have an adverse impact on patients and the health of the nation.”
Specifically cited by the AMA is the proposed change in how health care coverage tax credits are to be assigned. 
While the Affordable Care Act (ACA) based monetary assistance on income, the American Health Care Act (AHCA) intends to calculate them based on age. 
The AMA notes, “…by relating credits to age – rather than inversely related to income – the AHCA will result in greater numbers of uninsured Americans.” 
Also identified as problematic are Medicaid rollbacks, the “repeal the Prevention and Public Health Fund,” and the defunding of Planned Parenthood as it would, “[restrict] access to otherwise qualified providers of care for covered services."
The health care bill feedback coming from GOP Senators and the White House has been mixed, notes NPR.
Some lawmakers have expressed their disappointment that the bill doesn’t distance itself from the Affordable Care Act enough, while others are reluctant to support Medicaid cuts and the defunding of Planned Parenthood. 
Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price referred to the AHCA in its present state as “a work in progress,” notes Politico.
Conversely, President Trump has offered his full support, calling the bill “great” and anticipating “tremendous support.” 
He also asserted the AHCA, “will lower costs, expand choices, increase competition, and ensure health care access for all Americans.”
