by Anthony FalcoWhen a 7.8 earthquake hit New Zealand’s South Island in November, it eliminated a thriving biosphere – and no one was there to see it happen. Underwater mudslides severely damaged the Kaikōura Canyon seabed, an area that 10 years ago was measured by New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) to have one of the highest volumes of organisms living in the mud throughout the world. Post-earthquake, however, is a different story.
