Sweden’s former prime minister continues to speak out against President Trump’s claims about the Scandinavian country.
During a recent appearance on CNN International, Carl Bildt told host Hala Gorani, “We expect the president of the United States to have sources of information that goes beyond Fox News.”
The controversy began when the president said at a rally in Florida on Saturday, “We’ve got to keep our country safe. You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this?”
Bilt tweeted in response, “Sweden? Terror attack? What has he been smoking? Questions abound.”
The BBC also confirmed, “There were no reported terrorist incidents in Sweden on Friday.”
But Trump tried to explain his remark by tweeting, “My statement as to what's happening in Sweden was in reference to a story that was broadcast on @FoxNews concerning immigrants & Sweden.”
And the following day, the president issued a follow-up tweet stating, “Give the public a break - The FAKE NEWS media is trying to say that large scale immigration in Sweden is working out just beautifully. NOT!”
Soon after, Bilt tweeted the message, “Just a piece of friendly advice: when you are in a hole, stop digging.”
