La La Land has already broken records winning seven Golden Globes last month, all boding well for the forthcoming Oscars.

The film is a throwback musical about an aspiring actress and jazz pianist played by Ryan Gosling. He missed out on the best actor award which went to Casey Affleck.

Affleck won it for his role in the family drama “Manchester by the Sea“which is about an uncle who is asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy’s father dies. The film also won the best original screenplay.

There was also British success in the form of best supporting actor for Dev Patel for his performance in the tear jerker film Lion.

Meanwhile if any one was waiting for political acceptance speeches after Meryl Streep’s at the Golden Globes, then Director Ken Loach didn’t disappoint. While accepting the outstanding British Film award for his gritty “I Daniel Blake” about the struggles of living on benefits he slammed what he described as the brutality of the UK government.
