CNN has fired back at President Trump who claimed that the network interrupted Bernie Sanders’ interview with host Erin Burnett after the senator jokingly called it fake news.
Early Sunday morning, Trump tweeted, “While on FAKE NEWS @CNN, Bernie Sanders was cut off for using the term fake news to describe the network. They said technical difficulties!”
About an hour later, CNN Communications wrote back, “@realDonaldTrump False. Transcript from @ErinBurnett [interview with] @SenSanders. He was not cut off. Those are the facts.”
The media outlet also included a link to a transcript of the Friday interview where Burnett had asked Sanders about a brewing controversy involving National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and Russia. When she showed a clip of Trump disavowing knowledge of the situation, the senator joked, “Well, I don't know, maybe he was watching CNN fake news, what do you think?"
He further noted, "That was a joke."
Soon after, it appeared that Sanders was no longer able to hear Burnett so she said, “It looks like we've lost connection with Senator Sanders. So let's just try to get that back up.”
After they failed to reconnect right away, Burnett announced a break, and eventually returned with Sanders; she then issued an apology for the technical glitch, repeated his joke about CNN as fake news, then they continued their discussion about Flynn.
