Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is in Washington for talks with President Donald Trump with Abe determined to cement a good relationship with the new man in the White House.

In typical style Trump has already bad-mouthed Tokyo accusing the Japanese of stealing American jobs.

The balm in all this will be a game of golf as Abe will join Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach.

Trump played the diplomat:“The bond between our two nations and the friendship between our two peoples runs very, very deep. This administration is committed to bringing those ties even closer.”

Abe reiterated Trump’s comments:“In a relaxed atmosphere I hope to take time to discuss with Donald the future of the world, the future of the region and the future of Japan and the United States.”

There is nothing new in golf diplomacy in 1957 US President Dwight Eisenhower took on Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi the paternal grandfather of Shinzo Abe.
