Republican Senator Ted Cruz has accused the Democrats of being “the party of the Ku Klux Klan.”
He made the comment on Fox News Wednesday after contentious confirmation process for Senator Jeff Sessions, President Trump’s nominee for attorney general.
During the interview, Cruz was asked about a particularly notable incident where Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren was prevented from speaking further on the grounds that she had "impugned" Sessions, a violation of Senate rules.
Warren had been reading a 1986 letter from Coretta Scott King which discussed Sessions’ alleged voter intimidation efforts at the time, notes CNN.
Cruz said during his interview, “The charges that she was making against Jeff Sessions are demonstrably false, they’re slanderous, they’re ugly...”
He then added, “When the left doesn’t have any other arguments, they go and just accuse everyone of being a racist, and it’s an ugly ugly part of the modern Democratic party.”
Cruz went on to say, “...the Democrats are the party of the Ku Klux Klan. You look at the most racist...the Dixiecrats--they were Democrats who imposed segregation, imposed Jim Crow laws who founded the Klan. The Klan was founded by a great many Democrats. And yet now, the Democrats just accuse anyone they disagree with of being a racist.”
According to the Washington Post, "the [Senate] chamber is scheduled to vote Wednesday evening on the fate of Sen. Jeff Sessions."
The Los Angeles Times notes that if Sessions is confirmed as the next U.S. attorney general, he is set to oversee numerous challenges including the administration’s embattled immigration order, Trump’s pledge to deport more illegal immigrants, and broader terrorism and hate crimes investigations, among others.
