First lady Melania Trump has refiled a lawsuit which claims she lost out on opportunities to make millions of dollars after a media source falsely alleged she had been an escort.
The suit against Mail Media, Inc., also known as Mail Online, was filed in New York on February 6 by her attorney Charles Harder who notably represented Hulk Hogan in his successful $140 million case against Gawker, notes the Washington Post.
The document states that Mrs. Trump is “seeking redress for the commercial harm done to her, her commercial brand and her business opportunities as the result of several false, salacious and highly offensive statements about her published by Mail Online on August 19, 2016.”
It goes on to claim, in part, that “Plaintiff had the unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as an extremely famous and well-known person...to launch a broad-based commercial brand in multiple product categories, each of which could have garnered multi-million dollar business relationships for a multi-year term during which plaintiff is one of the most photographed women in the world.”
The lawsuit then denies that she was ever an escort and says that Mail Online printed the defamatory piece despite lacking reliable evidence backing the claims.
As such, Mrs. Trump is asking for at least $150 million in compensatory and punitive damages.
In early September 2016, Mail Online had printed a retraction to its original story, saying it “regrets any such misinterpretation.”
However, based on the damage her team is claiming has already been done, the lawsuit was recently refiled after getting dismissed in Maryland due to jurisdiction reasons, notes Quartz.
