Senate Democrats debate all night in hopes of stopping DeVos
  • 7 years ago
Senate Democrats stayed up for an all-night floor session to make their case against President Donald Trump's Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos . DeVos, a billionaire philanthropist and charter-schools advocate, has faced unusually fierce opposition for a role that rarely receives congressional debate or public notice. Democrats point out that DeVos has no personal or professional experience in public education or elected public office, and seemed really unprepared in her confirmation hearing. Two moderate Republicans say they plan to vote to block her nomination, but she still has the support of 50 Republican senators as well as Vice President Mike Pence, who can cast the tie-breaking vote.
