The Center for New York City Affairs at The New School (http://www.newschool.edu/) hosts a public event to explore this gap between men's and women's wages. As part of the panel discussion for the event, key actors, including economists, government representatives, activists, and corporate leaders come together to share their experiences. Special focus will be on questions of: (1) what is the nature of the pay gap and why does it exist, (2) who is affected the most, and (3) what policy initiatives can be taken to close the gap?

It is well known that women in the United States are paid, on average, 77 cents for every dollar that a man earns. Sometimes, this is a result of women getting paid less for the same work. In other cases, women are under-represented in higher-earning positions or take different career paths due to family responsibilities. The wage gap varies among women and is larger for women of color and women in particular sectors and occupations.
