This Blood Centrifuge Costs Only 20 Cents
  • 7 years ago
by Jeff DonlanStanford researchers have developed a way to test for diseases like malaria, HIV, and tuberculosis by studying a whirligig toy. They’ve created a “paperfuge,” which is similar to the high-tech centrifuges used to separate blood to test for diseases. But the paperfuge is electricity-free and costs only 20 cents, compared to the thousands of dollars that centrifuges cost.Researchers brought the tool to Madagascar to teach locals and physicians how to use it. They hope to release the paperfuge to the millions without access to electricity.
