Volkswagen finally topped the list as the largest automaker of 2016, despite the company's widespread diesel emissions scandal. The German car makers took the title from Toyota, a long-running competitor over the last four years. Toyota's global sales reached 10.2 million, while Volkswagen came in at 10.3 million. President Trump criticized the Japanese car manufacturer for its investment in Mexico. In response, the company pledged to invest $10 billion in the U.S. over the next five years in addition to opening a plant in Indiana.
